Schrieber anxious to stay in Canada for future inquiry hearings

OTTAWA – Karlheinz Schreiber wants to be sure he can remain in the country for future hearings at the public inquiry into his business dealings with former prime minister Brian Mulroney.

Schreiber has been fighting for years to avoid extradition to Germany, where he’s wanted on fraud, bribery and tax evasion charges.

Justice Minister Rob Nicholson ruled last year he could stay in Canada to participate in the inquiry headed by Justice Jeffrey Oliphant,

But with his personal testimony nearing an end, Schreiber says he fears the government might move to get him out of the country before the inquiry ends.

His lawyer Richard Auger gave notice Thursday he may ask Oliphant to issue an order ensuring that Schreiber will remains available for future proceedings.,

There will be further legal arguments at a later date. For now, Schreiber is sure to stay because inquiry counsel Richard Wolson wants to recall him for at least one more day of testimony.
