Search crews find body of Alberta avalanche victim

Search crews have recovered the body of a Calgary hiker who was buried in an avalanche near Canmore, Alta., near the B.C. border, officials said Thursday.

The 37-year-old man was hiking on Wednesday with a friend near the Three Sisters dam when an avalanche hit, sweeping the victim over a cliff.

The search was called off that night as darkness fell, and the man’s body was found Thursday morning under half a metre of snow.

RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb told CBC News that while the avalanche danger in the area wasn’t specified particularly high, all mountains are at a higher-than-average risk right now.
