Selena Gomez on Bieber, purity rings and the Internet making her cry

Good job, Internet. You made Selena Gomez cry. In her closet, no less. The singer — and Justin Bieber ex — opens up to the the Sunday Times about that purity ring she got when she was 13 that she doesn’t wear anymore.

“I’m not embarrassed to say that the ring has come off,” she says. “I got it was I was 13 and I respect so much what it represented, but it isn’t for everyone.” Also not for everyone? The mounds of criticism a young singer can endure online for having a change of heart about heavily symbolic jewelry: “Sometimes you have to lie to yourself to get through the criticism, and then you’re in your closet crying,” Gomez says. “It’s been like that for me a couple of times, but I only want to learn from those things.” Great job, guys. Sheesh.

And the, of course, there’s the whole Justin Bieber thing, an association Gomez realizes she won’t be able to shake anytime soon. “It’s difficult for people to separate us. The internet wants to freeze this moment in time and constantly repeat it,” she says.

“I didn’t think I was doing anything bad by falling in love. There’s such an emphasis on people being the perfect thing and then destroying them because it’s good press. Throw in the fact that you’re a teenager, it makes it more difficult.”
