Sens group opts out of bailout money

Two years into a three-year $1.4-million bailout from the city, fortunes have changed so much for the Bell Sensplex that it’s not taking the remaining $600,000.

On Thursday, Senators Sports and Entertainment president Cyril Leeder informed the city’s community and protective services committee that operations had improved to the point that the public-private partnership could now be considered a success.

The $25.6-million facility was the city’s first P3 project when it opened in 2004, but ran into trouble and required a bailout from the city in 2007.

“We have achieved and are exceeding the original financial expectations and operating expectations,” Leeder said.
