‘Serial’ just dropped like Beyonce

The second season of everyone’s favorite true crime podcast, “Serial,” quickly debuted at 6 a.m. this morning — meaning the return of intrepid host Sarah Koenig, a new tale of potential criminal injustice and yes, “Mail Kimp.”

TheThis American Life”byproductcaptured a cult following last year with the tale of Adnan Syed, a Baltimore man currently serving time for the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. Not only did the podcast shed light onto the shoddy and potentially nefarious details of the trial and investigation, it made us question our ability to remember and interpret details.

Season two introducesSgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the American soldier who was held captive by theTaliban from 2009-2014 after he wandered away from his Army outpost. He was brought back to the U.S through a tradeorganized by the Obama administration that freed five Taliban inmates in June 2014, briefly celebrated, and returned to active dutyby June. Then in March 2015, he was charged with dissertion and misbehavior before the enemy. The latter holds a life sentence.

Episode one, titled “DUSTWUN” (meaning, “duty status — whereabouts unknown”), introduces Bergdahl and his then triumphant return to the U.S. just as media’s tone took a dramatic turn “from hero to deserter.”
