SIU probes shooting

Undercover police officers shot one man and wrestled another to the ground at a noon-hour drug bust in east Toronto.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing yesterday’s incident, which sent both men to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation began in York Region, but eventually the police officers tracked two suspects to the corner of Orchard Park Drive and Kingston Road, just east of Morningside Avenue.

Witnesses said a man on a bike — believed to be in his late teens — and a 22-year-old man in a van met near Orchard Park Drive when plainclothes officers from York Region arrived on the scene.

The two split up. The van disappeared down one street, while the man on the bike headed west on Kingston Road.

Despite being shot in the chest, the driver sped away and later turned up at Rouge Valley-Centenary hospital with a “superficial” wound.

The other man also went to hospital with “cuts and bruises” received during the skirmish, investigators said.
