Somerville cyclist runs red light, gets hit by car

State Police in Medford responded to Broadway in Somerville early Monday morning after a cyclist sustained serious injuries from a crash with a motor vehicle.

According to police reports a 19-year-old Somerville resident biked through a red light and got hit by a Hyundai Elantra traveling on route 16, near the Broadway intersection.

The cyclist was transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries, according to police reports.

A State Police investigation determined the driver of the Elantra, a 46-year-old Medford man, wasn’t at fault for the crash.

The right lane on the eastbound side of Route 16 at the crash scene was closed for 45 minutes to accommodate the rescue response and crash investigation, according to reports.
