Spain supporters paint Vancouver red

Jubilant Spain fans took to the streets of Vancouver yesterday, turning public spaces into impromptu dance parties after Los Rojos beat the Netherlands in the final game of the World Cup.

People wearing Spanish flags as capes paraded up and down Commercial Drive, singing, “Olé, olé, olé!” and blowing vuvuzelas after the final whistle.

One man ran onto the street and yelled, “Finally!”

Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time for its first World Cup title.

Spectators crammed into restaurants and pubs or stood on sidewalks watching through windows to catch the last game of the month-long tournament.

Ace Hartline, 28, braved the heat to watch the game outside on Commercial Drive.
“The energy is so much better than at home,” she said.

“I’m really happy,” said Maria Turmo of Barcelona, who watched the game on Granville Street.

“I’ll probably to go the beach … with my friends to celebrate.”
