Special unit investigating officer’s alleged shooting of suspect

Seven investigators and two forensic officers from Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit have been called in after an Ottawa police officer allegedly shot and killed a man suspected of robbing a bank Friday night.?

At around 7 p.m., Ottawa police responded to a robbery in progress at the TD bank branch in a mall at 562 Montreal Rd.

Officers located a male suspect fleeing the area on foot. According to a statement from the SIU, the officers “interacted” with the suspect. During that “interaction,” several gunshots were fired, with at least one hitting the suspect.

Paramedics were called to the scene on the west side of Claude Street near Clarke Avenue where a man was pronounced dead.?

Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident Friday to come forward.

Meanwhile, Ottawa police continue to investigate a shooting that also took place close to midnight Friday in the area of Baycrest Drive and Heron Road.

A 24-year-old Ottawa man remains in serious but stable condition in hospital. Police have not released his name.
