Burton Albion hosts Manchester City in the second leg of the English Carabao Cup semifinals today at 2:40 p.m. ET at Pirelli Stadium. Manchester City leads 9-0 after their annihilation in the first leg back on Jan. 9.
Forward, Gabriel Jesus scored four goals for Man City in the first leg of the semifinals. Burton was only able to get one shot on target, which came within the first couple of seconds.
Manchester City is 18-2-3 with 56 points and is second in the English Premier League. They are four points back of Liverpool for the top seed.
Although it seems as if Manchester City doesn’t need any more firepower going into today’s match; Fullback Benjamin Mendy will be making his return today after undergoing knee surgery that sidelined him for 16 games. Mendy last played in November.
Man City will still be without captain Vincent Kompany, who has yet to recover from the muscle injury he sustained earlier this month.
Burton Albion is 10-6-12 with just 36 points and is 13th in the English League One (the country’s third tier of soccer) standings.
Although all hope might be lost for Burton fans, they still have a lot to be happy about.
Burton’s boss, Nigel Clough told BBC Sports, “It will probably never happen again. To beat the teams we have beaten to get here and end up in the last four with Manchester City, Chelsea, and Tottenham – three of the best sides in Europe.”
