Minicamp is barely a couple of weeks completed and training camp is not quite here but the mocks for the 2018 NFL Draft are in full-effect. And there is plenty of unison and yet division when it comes to the discussion about the New York Giants.
Division, in part, because the mock drafts have obviously not coalesced behind a single name for the Giants with the draft still 10 months again. Unison in opinion, however, in that a Wild Card team last year won’t be in the playoffs this year.
Most of the major mock drafts have the Giants out of the playoffs, a scenario which if prognosticated correctly, likely means that the Giants picks in the 2018 NFL Draft would not be made by current general manager Jerry Reese.
CBSSports.com’s Ryan Wilson has the Giants picking at No. 17 and going after Saquon Barkley, a Penn State running back who was a former commit to Rutgers before flipping his verbal to the Nittany Lions.
Wilson calls Barkley “another weapon” for a Giants offense that is seemingly loaded with playmakers but lacks a true established talent at running back.
Barkley, a very productive and versatile running back, is considered one of the top running backs in the nation.
Just a few days ago, another CBSSports.com mock draft has the Giants again at No. 17 and again adding to their offense. But this time around they go offensive line, something they’ve failed to do in the opening rounds of the past two NFL Drafts despite pressing needs in protecting quarterback Eli Manning.
The pick here, according to draft expert Jared Dubin, is Notre Dame lineman Mick McGlinchey. It is a move that Dubin said is meant to emulate the Dallas Cowboys success with Zach Martin, a former Fighting Irish offensive lineman.
