Adequately replacing Jay McNeil might be impossible but the Calgary Stampeders did everything in their power to make it happen yesterday during the CFL Canadian college draft.
With their first two picks, the Stamps focused on young offensive linemen, an obvious need with the retirement of the team’s 14-year guard and two-time Grey Cup champion after last season.
Yesterday, Calgary drafted guard Dimitri Tsoumpas with the second overall pick before grabbing tackle Jesse Newman with the No. 3 selection.
The Stamps moved up in the draft by dealing offensive lineman John Comiskey to the Edmonton Eskimos, their picks in the second and third rounds, along with recently signed receiver Kevin Challenger.
“I’m very pleased with the players we selected in the first round,” said Stampeders head coach/GM John Hufnagel.
“We wanted to improve our depth and talent on the offensive line and I believe we did that.”
