A Middlesex County Superior Court grand jury indicted a now suspended state trooper on charges including rape, strangulation and stalking.

Investigators said that Robert Sundberg, of Boxborough, violently assaulted his girlfriend last April inside of their shared apartment, WCVB reported.

“It started and progressed with verbal abuse, the pulling of the hair, things like that,” said the alleged victim, who is also a state trooper, according to the report. “Then, after, it just slowly got worse and worse.”

Sundberg allegedly restrained the victim’s movement, put his hands on her throat, choked her and also put her in a chokehold. The victim reportedly said she waited until he fell asleep before sneaking out of the home to report the violence.

Sundberg’s attorney said the victim made the allegations because Sundberg wanted to end the relationship.

Witnesses testified that they saw one of the couple’s violent fights before and prosecutors provided photographs of bruises on the victim’s body that were taken by investigators.

An arraignment has not yet been scheduled, according to WCVB.
