It’s official: Stephen Colbert will be leaving “The Colbert Report” to take over David Letterman’s old gig as host of “The Late Show” at CBS.
Colbert was rumored to be the top choice almost as soon as Letterman announced his retirement, with Mashable suggesting early on it would be him. After only one week of speculation (and presumably behind the scenes negotiating), CBS announced that Colbert would be taking over the show, and that he’d been signed to a five year agreement.
In CBS’ release about the changeover, Colbert said the following:
“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career,” said Colbert. “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead.”
Adding, “I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”
No filming location has been picked yet, and CBS is holding off on announcing a premiere date until they work out the details of Letterman’s final shows.
