State Police are warning incoming students to be mindful of their surrounding when traveling through Boston alone at night after another alleged sexual attack on the Esplanade occurred early Sunday morning.
“It’s always a concern. In a couple of weeks we will see an influx in thousand of college students so we ask that all new residents be aware of some safety measures,” said State Police spokesman David Procopio.
According to police reports, a man told Boston University Police that a woman he encountered on the Esplanade said she was sexually assaulted and thrown into the Charles River.
The man told troopers a 20-year-old student near Commonwealth Avenue and Deerfield Street said the attack took place just before 3 a.m.
When police arrived, the victim was no longer with the man, according to police reports.
Procopio said officers used the contents of the woman’s purse, which was in the man’s possession, to identify the 20-year-old female and report to her address.
According to police, when officers arrived at her house, the victim refused medical attention and would not provide a description of the assailant.
Procopio said the alleged assault occurred as multiple agencies, including State Police, Boston Police, and the Suffolk District Attorney, continue to investigate four sexual assaults in recent years — three that occurred near the Esplanade and one that occurred in South Boston.
According to Procopio, those attacks are linked.
“With more young people in the city there will be more young people in these areas,” he said. “We are urging them to be mindful of their surroundings.”
