Students back to school a few days early

With school supplies in hand, Joanne Peters dropped her daughter off for her first day of grade six at Don Bosco Elementary and Jr. High School Thursday as students headed back for the first day of the 2009-2010 school year.

Peters is excited about the start of the school year and likes the idea of students going back earlier than usually.

“I think it’s good because they don’t settle in for a few days anyways. To give them three days head start is a nice chance to get all the anxiety out of the way.”

Janet Sutherland, senior communications specialist for the Calgary Catholic School District, said the day went off as a normal school day.

Sutherland said she hadn’t heard of any transportation delays such as missed buses, but that it is not uncommon during the first few days of school.

Students have gone back to school three days early this year because of the WorldSkills Cultural Celebration is being held Sept. 1 to 7 at the Stampede Grounds.

Sutherland said a majority of students will going to the grounds or hosting countries at their schools.

“I think it’s a great educational opportunity for our students,” said Sutherland.
