Students in awe of ‘controlled chaos’

It was controlled chaos.

Calgary fire crews burned down two fully-furnished demo houses at the SAIT campus yesterday, to demonstrate to post-secondary students how quickly fires can spread.

“We just want students to understand how quickly fires spread and how dangerous it is, especially for students who may be living in off-campus housing,” said fire spokesperson Brian McAsey.

It was the first time the fire demonstration was conducted in Canada, and the Calgary fire department hopes to do it again.

Tammy Adacsi, who was severely injured in a 2009 apartment fire that killed three people, was on hand.

“I’m still healing, but I thought it would be good to come out and help in taking a proactive approach,” she said. “It’s a good idea to educate on the issue.”

Tanis Reid, a first-year SAIT student, said the fire event was a good reminder.

“You don’t realize how fast things catch fire. That could have been my bedroom,” she said.
