Students seek funds for Africa

Adventure cyclist Ryan Correy realizes his state-of-the-art mountain bike is a luxury people in developing countries can’t afford.

“Biking is my passion,” he said, “but there are places where people have no choice but to ride one every day for hours.”

The 2012 Olympic hopeful, UNICEF Alberta’s athlete ambassador for 2009, was at George P. Nicholson Elementary School yesterday to launch UNICEF’s Trick or Treat fundraising campaign and to congratulate students for raising $8,000 last year.

Donations benefit the charity’s Schools for Africa program.

Fourth-grader Michael Yakimchuk said he thinks the school can beat last year’s record.

“We only raised enough to build a watering hole, buy some desks and a latrine. I’d like to do more.”
