Organic foods usually cost more, but does that mean increased health benefits?
New research out of the UK suggests the price is not worth it if you’re looking for more nutritional value. In comparing the health value of various organic products — including produce and meats — to non-organic examples, the study concluded that there is little or no difference when it comes to vitamin and mineral content.
Calgary dietitian Lindy Kennedy agreed.
“When you choose organic foods you’re not necessarily getting a better nutrition quality,” she said.
However, an organic foods rep criticized the study for not being thorough.
“The side that they’re not talking about at all in that study is the negative impact of all those chemicals that come along with conventionals,” said Liam Muzichuk of Community Natural Foods.
