History and modernity coalesce in gentle harmony at Corktown District, a new east-end oasis created by Streetcar Developments in the heart of Toronto’s historic Corktown.
Located in the King Street East neighbourhood, Corktown District lofts and townhomes offer low- and mid-rise living for dwellers who prefer traditional good looks with a modern feel.
Designer Hannah Waisberg says one of her goals was to highlight the contrast between historic and modern at Corktown District.
“My inspiration was really the city around us. I wanted to show a young, hip, modern feel with a contrast to Corktown, which is a very historic district,” Waisberg said.
The two model loft suites Waisberg designed show that opposing forces can work extremely well in setting the right tone.
The “Cool” suite features posh concrete floors, high-gloss cabinetry and a stainless steel backsplash offset with gentle wood furniture, while the “Warm” suite sports engineered hardwood flooring, dark ebony cabinets, an exposed brick wall and strong white accents. Both suites soar with 10-ft high ceilings showing off exposed ducts and open-concept designs befitting the loft lifestyle. For accents and other design choices, it’s all about showcasing how much freedom exists within suite-living.
“I’m always trying to convey an open concept, that even a limited amount of space can still feel open and big,” Waisberg said.
Sustainability is a big part of the development, including a green roof that houses a bird habitat and storm water collectors while low-flow fixtures and energy efficient lighting within units make eco-efficiency a breeze. A car-share program among residents definitely plays into the positive camaraderie of the development as well while making it possible for residents to enjoy the occasional benefits of a car without having to buy one themselves. In many ways, Corktown District aims for a harmony seldom found in downtown city living.
“I hope people get the feeling that it’s a timeless design that’s urban, sustainable and hip,” Waisberg said.
