Suspect arrested after cab driver stabbed in neck

A taxi driver was stabbed in the neck during a robbery in the city, Vancouver police said on Thursday.

The driver felt a prick on his neck and realized he’d been stabbed just as he stopped the cab to drop off a fare on the 500-block of Homer Street Wednesday morning, Const. Anne Longley said in a release.

The attacker ran out of the cab with the driver giving chase until the cabbie realized he was bleeding.

He was treated by paramedics and eventually taken to hospital with a two-inch knife wound on his neck.

As the driver was being cared for, police located a suspect at a nearby hotel.

“In an apparent attempt to deter the pursuit, the man sprayed pepper spray into a hallway of the hotel,” Longley said. “He was quickly arrested by police and taken to jail.”

Thomas Brian Smith, 30, appeared in court on Thursday to face charges of robbery and assault.
