Teachers get new talks deadline

Toronto’s public board and the union representing its 6,500 high school teachers now have until midnight Thursday to hammer out a deal.

The two sides resumed negotiations yesterday under a media blackout and plan to meet again this morning.

Toronto is the only public board in Ontario not to have an agreement with its local Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation.

“We’re still talking and I remain very hopeful that we will get an agreement that’s very good for our teachers,” said John Campbell, chair of the Toronto District School Board.

Last Friday at midnight was the original deadline — after which a 12 per cent raise from the province was supposed to have been pulled — but both sides agreed to the extension. Technically, both the board and union have until Thursday to ratify a new agreement, but it’s unclear how firm the new deadline is.
