On the heels of a video showing blast-resistant trash cans used in MBTA stations being blown to bits during tests, Logan Airport officials are examining their own reinforced-steel trash barrels built to withstand a terrorist’s bomb.
A video obtained by WBZ-TV of the T testing one of the $2,000 trash cans purchased after the Sept. 11 terror attacks shows the can exploding. The test was performed after the T purchased 220 of the cans using $500,000 in federal grant monies.
Logan spokesman Phil Orlandella said airport officials met about its 500 similar trash cans yesterday.
“We’re looking into it, and some of our staff is trying to get more info about the tests,” Orlandella said.
When Transit Police tested two cans at Fort Devens in 2005, one failed.
After the manufacturer disputed the amount and placement of explosives used, the cans passed an independent test. But the amount of explosives were still a fraction of what was used in the 2004 Madrid train bombings.
“The TSA has never told transportation or public-safety agencies to stop using these barrels,” MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. “Like many other transit systems, the T has no plans to buy any more.”
