The 5 quirkiest NYC stories of 2015

This year was a roller coaster in news stories for New York City, and even though there were serious headlines, there were some that could make any reader giggle and scratch their head. So, here’s a look back at Metro’s top five quirkiest stories of 2015.

1.Epic water gun fight

Winter has finally decided to arrive in New York City, but one of the siliest moments in 2015 took place back in July when the summer sun shined down on the Big Apple.

On July 25, a massive crowd gathered in Central Park for a massive water gun battle that sprawled on the Great Lawn and included participants of all ages.

More than 64,000 people signed up on Facebook for the event, which was not authorized by Park officials but was guarded by police, and participants showed no mercy even to bystanders who were just going about their day.

Overall participants had a fun and wet time, and some even said they were excited to come back next year.

2.Unicycle Festival

Hundreds of unicycle riders got together this past year for a four-day festival — created by nonprofit Bindlestiff Family Cirkus founders Keith Nelson and Stephanie Monseu — highlighting the “rare hobby.”

Riders hopped on their one-wheel rides and traveled to Coney Island, Central and Battery parks, and Governors Island.

The group even wowed people as they made their way through the bike lane on the Brooklyn Bridge.

3.Nude Bollywood dancers take over Times Square

Step aside Naked Cowboy, because this year Bollywood dancers took over Times Square — wearing nothing but body paint.

The group of dancers — which caught the attention of everyone walking by — danced to a popular Indian song for a few minutes and afterwards took photos with people.

4.Nude looping

Nudity seemed to be a hot topic for 2015.

Performance artists Matthew Silver and Fritz Donnelly came together this year to develop the concept of “nude looping.”

For this, men and women got together for the city’s first naked looping — wearing nothing but their birthday suits — and performing improv movements amongst each other.

The large group of people took part in the performance art piece inside Manhattans Rivington Design House and some even performed outside on the sidewalk — making everyone who passed by stop and take out their phones.

5.Pizza rat

The list of quirkiest stories in New York City cannot be complete without one popular rodent who went viral with his love for pizza.

A video was posted on YouTube this September of a subway rat carrying a full slice of pizza down the stairway at an L station in Manhattan.

The little critter makes it down the stairs pretty far with the pizza in its mouth before dropping it.

Since being posted, the video has garnered over 8 million views and other vermin has also been captured enjoying some of our food, such as milkshake squirrel and pizza raccoon.
