Justin Bieber has made a career of things happening to him too fast and too early, so why should we be surprised that he thinks he’s already completed his redemption arc from bratty douche-prince to reformed, soulful sensitive man? The Biebs graces the cover of Seventeen magazine this month — and I can’t tell if that’s a step up or a step down from Men’s Health — to talk all about how much he’s changed. “I was rebelling a little bit. I was getting cockier and cockier. I didn’t have people to check me. I looked back and I was disappointed in myself,” he says, reflecting on his tumultuous 2014. “You have to own up to the mistakes. You have to say, ‘I’m sorry if I’ve let you down.’ I always want to be honest and let people know that those mistakes aren’t who I am. Who I am is someone who really cares about people.” Here’s the thing, though, Justin. The more you have to go out of your way to tell everyone how much of a jerk you aren’t, the less believable it sounds.

That he thinks that phase is already all over and done with.
