For its newest journey, i nstead of going where no man has gone before, “Star Trek” is returning to its homebase.

New York City will host a three-day “completely unique fan event” to celebrate 50 years of “Star Trek” called Star Trek: Mission New York. The event, which will run Sept. 2-4 at the Javits Center, brings the franchise back to the city where the modern convention was born — the Statler Hotel (now the Hotel Pennsylvania) held the first-ever “Star Trek” fan event in 1972.

“’Star Trek’ fans set the gold standard of what these type of experiential events are all about,” said Lance Fensterman, global senior vice president of ReedPOP in a statement. “Star Trek: Mission New York will be a completely unique fan event unlike anything seen before, giving them the chance to go beyond panels and autograph signings, and immerse themselves in the Star Trek universe.”

The event will include panels, screenings and celebrity guests, as well as interactive exhibits, according to organizers CBS, which is producing a new online television series in the “Star Trek” universe set to premiere in 2017, and ReedPOP, which also stages New York City Comic Con and Star Wars Celebration.

This year was already set to be a big one for the franchise. It’s the 50th anniversary of the original series’ debut on NBC on Sept. 8, 1966. In July, the third movie in the rebooted universe that began with JJ Abrams’ “Star Trek” in 2009 will be released. And CBS’ new series will mark the franchise’s return to a television-style format since “Enterprise” ended in 2005.
