The Cheat Sheet: Facebook and its movie version, The Social Network

Poor Mark Zuckerberg. Few other public figures will be the subject of the year’s most highly anticipated movie — the film will likely become the definitive pop cultural rendering of the young bajillionaire, and it’s not a flattering one. But like your momma always told you, don’t believe everything in the movies. Lots of writers have chimed in, pointing out inaccuracies, coming to the Zuck’s defence, or offering subtexts or alternate readings of The Social Network. Here are three great takes on (or takedowns of) The Social Network:

  • A Harvard alum who knew Zuckerberg in college says the film doesn’t paint an accurate portrait of the Facebook founder, or the academic atmosphere in which the site was conceived.
  • The Social Network has a woman problem — why are all the female portrayals, save the one of Zuckerberg’s ex-girlfriend, so damn insulting?
  • If you’re curious just what’s true and what isn’t, here’s a chronicle of how the creation of Facebook went down — allegedly.
  • Bonus: Have you seen our totally hilarious MetroTube about The Social Network? The Facebook Movie, in one minute.
