Now’s your chance to help others — all while sleuthing around Manhattan with your friends.
This Saturday will be the Great Urban Race, a competition which includes mental and physical challenges to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
This summer is the fifth year of the citywide challenge, which starts at the Upper West Side Boat Basin Cafe. Teams must collect 12 “clues” in order to win. For example, participants may be asked to pluck an exotic bug from a city park, complete a yoga move at a studio or paddle a boat in Central Park.
“The whole purpose of the event is to provide a fun day … running around the city,” said race director Lauren Shield.
The first 25 teams to finish win a chance to compete for the national championship in New Orleans — and its $10,000 prize.
The race started in 2007, and interest was so great that this year, for the first time, they broke it into two — one in Brooklyn held in June, and this month’s race in Manhattan.
For each person that enters, Red Frog Events, which hosts the race, will donate $10 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The West Side Campaign Against Hunger, a food pantry, will also benefit.
