The Harvard China Forum holds its welcoming ceremony

The Harvard China Forum, the largest student run conference in America, held its welcoming ceremony Saturday at Harvard Memorial Church in Cambridge.

The event welcomed a wide range of speakers, including representatives from business, academia, media, and entertainment. This year’s theme centered around “Defining The Chinese Dream.”

Speakers included Harvard Business School Professor F. Warren McFarlan, iKang Healthcare Chairman Zhang Ligang, Ross Perot Jr., the son of 1992 presidential candidate Ross Perot, Hillhouse Capital Chairman Zhang Lei, and JD.com CEO Richard Liu.

The chapel was packed with an audience mostly comprised of East Asians. Audio devices were offered that provided translation services from English to Mandarin and Mandarin to English.

The primary topics covered revolved around the progress China has made — McFarlan had much to say on the topic — as well as the challenges ahead. Speakers also addressed the divide between China and the US, censorship, cybercrime, the medical sector, and the environment.

An example of this is using technology to streamline how goods flow through China.

When asked about the response to this event, Sabrina Castenfelt, president of the Harvard China Forum, said, “We love the enthusiasm that we get and the feedback that we get every year we sell out always too quickly.”

Castenfelt added, “We always wish we can just increase the number of places that we have available here specifically to serve anyone interested in coming.
