Take that, Oscars. It’s going to be an extra awkward end-run for this year’s Awards Season now that so much attention has been drawn to the lack of diversity at the Oscars, since every other awards show will inevitably be compared to them — and favorably, at that. Take, for example, this weekend’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, which saw trophies going to the likes of Idris Elba, Queen Latifah, Viola Davis and the cast of “Orange is the New Black.”
The cast of the Netflix women-in-prison hiteven took a moment to call out the Academy for its diversity issues. “Look at this stage, this is what we talk about when we talk about diversity,” Laura Prepon said while the “OITNB” cast was accepting the win for Best Performance by an Ensemble in a TV Comedy. “Different race, color, creed, sexual orientation — I mean, thank you so much.” And Elba himself actually took home two trophies. So take that, Oscar.
