‘The Voice’: Has ‘American Idol’ finally met its match?

“The Voice,” the Mark Burnett-produced singing competition that made its debut on NBC last night, brought in 11.8 million viewers, making it the top-rated broadcast series premiere since “Undercover Boss” hit CBS after last year’s Super Bowl. It even bested stalwart draws “Glee” and “Dancing with the Stars.”

The new reality competition stars judge/mentors Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, who heard auditioning singers last night sight unseen. If a judge liked what he heard, he turned his chair to face the music — er, um, the contestant, all of whom we’re assuming will undergo the requisite reality show makeovers somewhere down the line. Judges select eight singers for their “teams,” which will compete against each other for a recording contract with Universal Republic.
