“Do you have sailing, equestrian or water polo?” asks the first man. “No, but I have judo, swimming and fencing,” replies the second man.
This dialogue could be between two teenagers exchanging Rio 2016 figures. But actually it’s a conversation between adults who are swept up in the craze for collecting commemorative beer glasses, which depict sporting figurines.
The cups that cost R$13 (US $4) each – and no, don’t include beer – are available for 42 Olympic sports. To complete the whole collection you would have to spend a whopping R$546 (about $171), not including the hangover, of course.
The fans’ gotta collect them all attitude has caused a frenzy of excitement across the Olympic Park bars, with many customers specifying which glass they want to avoid repeats. As a result, the service line grows along with the alcoholism of the individuals chasing their very own version of an Olympic medal.
That said, the stylized glass is nothing new. At the World Cup, it caused a similar commotion among fans, who hauled them into piles at stadium exits.
