These are the happiest states in America

The United States may not be the happiest country in the world, but if you want to find bliss in the USA then it’s best to stick to certain locales, according to a new report.

A new analysis from WalletHub compared the 50 states and District of Columbia using 28 metrics, “ranging from emotional health to income levels to sports participation rates” to find out what states are the happiest.

WalletHub used those 28 metrics to evaluate three key dimensions: emotional and physical well-being; work environment; and community and environment.

When it came to the top 10, two states with overall great weather — Hawaii and California — were on this list, along with mostly states in the western half of the U.S. But there was not an apparent pattern when it came to their scores.

1. Utah
2. Minnesota
3. North Dakota
4. Hawaii
5. Colorado
6. Idaho
7. Iowa
8. Nebraska
9. South Dakota
10. California

Most of the bottom 10 were east of the Mississippi and several were in the south. Again, there wasn’t a solid pattern.

42. Missouri
43. Michigan
44. Oklahoma
45. Tennessee
46. Louisiana
47. Arkansas
48. Mississippi
49. Kentucky
50. Alabama
51. West Virginia

Taking a look at more specific factors, the Aloha State, although pricey, had the lowest depression rate and one of the lowest obesity and divorce rates. Curiously enough, Utah, the happiest state on the list, had one of the highest suicide rates of all the states. But on the bright side, it also had the lowest divorce rate and highest level of volunteerism.
