Eat dessert during Sweet September for hunger relief in New York

There’s no trendier part of a meal than dessert, from light-as-air cakes to elaborate ice cream sundaes. Why not tick some hot spots off your list while helping hunger relief for New York City’s most vulnerable residents?

That’s the idea behind Sweet September, when participating sweets shops and restaurants donate a portion of proceeds from special treats to benefit homebound seniors through the nonprofit Citymeals on Wheels.

With more than 30 restaurants and bakeries taking part, you’ll find something for every dessert craving. Splurge on the chocolate souffle at the recently reopened 21 Club, add an order of Hemp Seed Brownie Bites to your lunch order at Fresh & Co., try the sexy Île Flottante signature dessert at Le Coq Rico or cozy up to the Warm Tarte Tatin for Two at Rotisserie Georgette.

The restaurants donate a portion of the dish’s cost, anywhere between 25 cents per teddy bear-shaped financier at both locations of Colson Patisserie up to 50% of each Rose Turmeric Shortbread Cookie at the trendy new Mediterranean fast-casual spot Dez.

How your Sweet September helps Citymeals on Wheels

Sweet-toothed New Yorkers raise tens of thousands of dollars every year to help Citymeals on Wheels on its mission of delivering more than two million hot meals annually to over 18,000 elderly residents on weekends, holidays and during emergencies. So don’t forget to save room for dessert all month long.

In 2017, over 21,000 people volunteered nearly 68,000 hours of their time to trudge these meals through summer heat and winter show. Since its founding in 1981, Citymeals on Wheels has been funded by private donations, public grants from New York City, sponsors and other gifts to cover administrative costs. This means that 100% of all public donations, including all proceeds from the Sweet September promotion, will be used entirely for the preparation and delivery of meals.
