As founder & CEO of Saxbys, Nick Bayer is pretty busy these days. With locations across nine states as well as Saxbys’ growing Experiential Learning Program at college campuses, it’s understandable. That doesn’t mean that Bayer won’t find time to enjoy the summer months in Philadelphia with his family. The Rittenhouse resident fills us in on under-the-radar spots to keep cool as well as gives us an itinerary for the perfect summer day (and night) in Philadelphia.

What do you love most about Philly in the summer?  There is so much to do and I really love seeing visitors wander around Philadelphia and enjoy exploring our city so much.  It make me happy to see people enjoy what we sometimes take for granted.

Best way to keep cool?  Sister Cities Park on the Parkway is such an under-the-radar spot. It’s shaded and pretty chill despite being in the middle of the city, and there's a great fountain that my son loves to run through.

Best thing to eat in the summer?  Cold brew from Saxbys and gelato from Capogiro.

Best way to spend a free day?  Breakfast outside Parc, a jog down the Schuylkill River Trail, a stroll through the Franklin Institute, people watching in Rittenhouse Square, a pre-dinner drink at Bok, dinner at the bar at Zahav — and maybe even a nightcap at Vernick!

Outdoor event you're looking forward to? The outdoor event I’m looking forward to most is Wawa Welcome America for a lot of reasons — American patriotism (it celebrates Philadelphia's huge importance), and I can watch the firework show from my bed!

Best place to hang out with friends in the summer?  With a four-year-old son, I spend a lot of time at Taney Park with him at baseball practice and on the playground. It's great hanging with all the other parents and seeing our kids have such a great time in such a beautiful setting, surrounded by green and with the gorgeous Philadelphia skyline in the backdrop.

Best summer memory in Philly?  August 13, 2009 — I sat outside at The Bards drinking Guinness while writing my wedding vows. It was such an awesome night. Everyone walking around and in the bar was in the best mood, and it was surprisingly a great setting to do something ultimately so important.  I got married two days later and my wife loved the vows!
