Think pink and help find a cure

Last December, Jamie Johnston Masson completed her last treatment for breast cancer since being diagnosed in February 2009.

But the Ottawa resident doesn’t consider herself a survivor.

“I’m recovered,” she said. “But I don’t consider myself a survivor until there’s a cure. It could come back tomorrow if it wanted.

“I’m scared every day.”

Along with her team, the Breast Dress Project, Masson is hoping to raise $15,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation at the Run for the Cure on Oct. 3.

There’s still time to sign up for the event.

Organizers are expecting about 9,000 people to participate in the Ottawa event, which is aiming to raise $1.6 million for the foundation, said volunteer co-run director Rachel Tweedy.

Canadawide, 170,000 people will participate in the run. Individuals can sign up as late as Oct. 1 and 2 at any Running Room location, or onsite at Lebreton Flats on the day of the event.

Although the primary purpose of the event is to raise funds for research, education and awareness programs, the run also raises awareness for the importance of screening and early detection, said Tweedy.
