Three Patriots among elite free agents

At least three Patriots should generate interest when the NFL’s free-agent market opens in earnest this week.

Logan Mankins, Matt Light and BenJarvus Green-Ellis are on Pro Football Weekly’s annual list of the top 100 FAs in the league.

Mankins, ranked No. 4 by PFW, is unlikely to go anywhere — New England’s franchise tag should ensure that. But you never know … last year should be evidence enough of that.

Light (No. 21) is 33, so he’ll be looking for one last big contract. Simply put, the Patriots need to re-sign him.

Green-Ellis (No. 93) probably isn’t going anywhere, either: He’s a restricted free agent. But that doesn’t keep a team in need of a rusher from overpaying him.

Peyton Manning is No. 1 on the list, but he’s certain to be re-signed by Indianapolis. The first real question mark is at No. 2, where former Oakland CB Nnamdi Asomugha resides. He’ll want — and get — front-line QB money.
