The Ape
Rating: *** 1/2
The TIFF programme note for The Ape says it would be “criminally unfair” to offer anything like a synopsis of its contents. Enough to say that Jesper Ganslandt’s film is a sparse, focused account of a man (Olle Sarri) reeling in the aftermath of some terrible (and initially mysterious) event, and that it skillfully approximates the texture of an ever-worsening nightmare.
The handheld camerawork clearly evokes the second-skin intimacy of the Dardennes but to an entirely different purpose: In this case, our proximity to the protagonist yields something like the opposite of understanding.
