Tournament fund gifts minor hockey with $159,900

It’s been a year and a half since the 2009 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship ended in Ottawa, but the lasting effects of the tournament are just starting to be felt.

Yesterday, Hockey Canada and the Ottawa District Hockey Association announced the first round of recipients from the tournament’s $497,000 legacy fund.

Fourteen minor league hockey associations will share $159,900 for various things like goalie equipment, rink dividers, or hosting forums to educate players and coaches.

The SouthEnd Minor Hockey Association received $20,000 to create an endowment fund to assist underprivileged and disadvantaged youth.

“It’s a sustainable fund that will help with equipment, registration fees, and out-of-town tournaments, to make sure that kids, despite any financial hardship they might otherwise face, can be part of the team,” said Ann Mainville-Neeson, vice-president of the SouthEnd Minor Hockey Association.
