Trump bashes ‘Mexican’ judge in university lawsuit

The judge presiding over a six-yearlawsuit against Trump University has ordered the release of internal documents as part of a class-action suit that alleges the people who paid up to $35,000 for classes were defrauded, the Washington Post reported Saturday.

Later, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump railed againstGonzalo Curiel, a district judge in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.

Trump, at a campaignrally in San Diego Friday, said “I have a judge who is a hater of Donald Trump—a hater. He’s a hater. His name is Gonzalo Curiel. And he is not doing the right thing,” Trump told a crowd of supporters.

“We’re in front of a very hostile judge. The judge was appointed by Barack Obama, federal judge,” Trump said amid boos from the audience. “Frankly, he should recuse himself because he’s given us ruling after ruling after ruling, negative, negative, negative.”

“What happens is the judge, who happens to be —we believe — Mexican. Which is great. I think that’s fine,” Trump said. “You know what? I think the Mexicans are going to end up loving Donald Trump when I give all these jobs, OK?”

Curiel, who was born in East Chicago, Indiana, is of Hispanic descent, according toCBS News.

Trump later called for an investigation into Curiel, who is expected to begin the trial for the candidate’s namesake university in November.

“I’m telling you, this court system, judges in this court system, federal court, they ought to look into Judge Curiel, because what Judge Curiel is doing is a total disgrace, OK?” Trump said.

In his order, Curielsaid parts of internal documents, including “playbooks” regarding running the now-defunct enterprise, should be released as part of the case.

Curiel also noted that over the course of the civil lawsuit, Trump has emerged as the leading presidential candidate, and in doing so, has “placed the integrity of these court proceedings at issue.”

One of the documents ordered released, the 2010 playbook, has already been published onlineby Politico.

This isn’t the first time Trump has attacked the federal judge.

In February, Trump said Curiel was biased against him because of his policy positions on immigration and his platform to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I think it has to do perhaps with the fact that I’m very, very strong on the border, very, very strong at the border,” Trump told Fox News in an interview. “He has been extremely hostile to me.”

The interview came after aFebruary rally in Arkansas, where the candidate had bashedCuriel for overseeing a case that he believed should have been thrown out years ago.

“There’s a hostility toward me by the judge —tremendous hostility — beyond belief,” Trump said then. “I believe he happens to be Spanish, which is fine. He’s Hispanic — which is fine.”
