Nova Scotia undergraduate tuition fees are the only ones in Canada to go down, but they’re still too expensive, says the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS).
Statistics Canada released its tuition fees data on Thursday.
Students here are used to paying the highest in the country. For the 2010-11 school year, undergrads are paying $5,495 — the third highest in Canada.
While fees for graduate students are also down over four per cent, they’re still paying the highest fees in the country at $7,350.
The numbers are deceiving, according to Rebecca Rose with CFS, because they take into effect the tuition fee rebate which is only available to Nova Scotia students who go to school in their home province.
“Although the report says fees are going down, they’re only frozen,” she said.
Tuition fees were frozen in 2008 until 2011.
The Statistics Canada data is timely as Tim O’Neill, a former Bank of Montreal executive hired by the provincial government in January to conduct a review of post-secondary education, is expected to present his findings Friday.
