UBC Iran analyst attending hunger strike

A University of British Columbia Iran analyst is attending the hunger strike in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York City this week to raise awareness for the violence and deaths in Iran.

Soushiant Zanganehpour, 26, is there to document the hunger strike that drew more than 1,200 supporters.

Zanganehpour, who helped organize the Silent Scream protest in Vancouver last month, described the three-day gathering as being positive and having plenty of energy.

The hunger strike started on Wednesday and will end Friday.

Zanganehpour said he hopes they will be able to gather enough content in the forms of signatures, videos and photos to present to the UN at the end of their rally.

“(The hunger strike) is creating a place and a time for people to show their solidarity regardless of their political affiliations,” said Zanganehpour. “We want some form of recognition from the United Nations that urgent action needs to be taken.”

Other supporters that made appearances included political activist Noam Chomsky and actors Sean Penn and Robert Redford.
