Unbeaten Tigers comfortable favourites at AUS women’s championship

The Dalhousie Tigers will be comfortable favourites at the Atlantic University Sport women’s soccer championship.

Sporting an unbeaten 10-0-3 record and league-best goals-for and-against totals, the Tigers head to St. John’s, N.L., in prime position to capture their first banner since 2001.

But with an ultra-competitive field, including the four-time defending champion Cape Breton Capers (7-2-4), their season can all come crashing down just as quickly.

“For us to get knocked off, it takes playing one game,” said Tigers head coach Jack Hutchison. “Soccer’s a funny game. I’ve been in games where we feel we’re the better team and we’ve hit three crossbars, two posts, missed four breakaways and they had only one shot and won the game 1-0.”

Still, Hutchison said the Tigers are “fairly confident and feeling good about things” heading into the weekend.

The No. 1-seeded Tigers have a bye to Saturday’s semifinals. They’ll face the lowest remaining seed at 1:30 p.m. The championship is Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The nationals are Nov. 12 to 15 in Toronto.
