Uncle asks for prayers for niece in Mexico

KINGSTON, N.S. – The uncle of a Canadian woman who was severely beaten in Mexico over the weekend says his niece is in a medically induced coma and doctors are going to have to perform extensive surgery on her in the coming days.

Robert Prosser of Kingston, N.S., said bones in Sheila Nabb’s face were broken from a beating Saturday at her hotel on Mexico’s west coast. The 37-year-old Calgary resident was on vacation with her husband.

“They will have to wire her jaw shut and put plates in where her cheek bones should be,” Prosser said in a telephone interview.

“It would be three to four weeks before they can move her back to Calgary.”

Prosser said he’s receiving updates on the condition of his niece, who is originally from the Halifax area, from the woman’s mother.

Nabb was on vacation at the Hotel Riu Emerald Bay in Mazatlan with her husband, Andrew Nabb, who is still in Mexico with her, Prosser said.

He said he was told Nabb was found in a pool of blood in a hotel elevator by staff. He said police are investigating.

“Pray for her recovery and think twice before you go to Mexico,” said Prosser.

Canada’s official travel warning for Mexico includes Mazatlan, an area that has experienced a surge in violence related to organized crime.

The incident is the latest report of violence involving Canadians visiting Mexico in recent weeks.

The body of Ximena Osequeda, a Vancouver resident and University of British Columbia student, was found last month partially buried on a beach in Huatulco, south of Acapulco.

Robin Wood, 67, of Salt Spring Island, B.C., was killed in January when he stood up to two suspects who tried to rob a friend’s home in the town of Melaque, south of Puerto Vallarta.
