Understated elegance

From fur and cast-iron, to suede and steel — the Chaplin model suite at the Courtyards of Upper Forest Hill was designed to feel as good as it looks.

“All the textures just welcome you in,” said designer Enza Checchia of Decorenza. “There’s light coming through glass and fur to greet your feet.”

A marriage of style and utility ideal for busy young professionals is what Checchia had in mind when designing the Chaplin — one of three model suites for SLM Property Investments Inc’s newest residences.

From a cream Barcelona chair to pale-green throw pillows, a variety of neutral colours are layered throughout the 852-square-foot unit. Natural maple flooring adds warmth to the white-walled space.

“We want the room to have a soothing, airy feeling. To be a really fresh space,” said Checchia, who described her style as understated elegance.

Black accents have been strategically placed to tie the rooms together. A dramatic black television cabinet balances the cream-coloured living area, while black-and-chrome bar stools add contrast to the kitchen.

To co-ordinate a suite that was both efficient and elegant, Checchia made subtle glamour her motto. Above the dining table hangs a crystal chandelier covered by an organza shade. The organza gives the traditional light fixture a contemporary twist.

“When designing for smaller spaces, everything must serve a double duty,” Checchia said, adding that the suite’s theme is “urban chic.”

Other notable pieces in the Chaplin suite include a mirror with a circular cast-iron pattern on top and an all-glass coffee table that doesn’t occupy much visual space.

Prices at the Courtyards of Upper Forest Hill range from $224,900 to $434,900 for suites from 828 to 1,330 square feet.
