Icy road conditions led to a massive chain reaction crash Sunday morning in Worcester that involved scores of cars.

The crashes occurred about 6:45 a.m. along Interstate 290, according to state police. Because of size of the incident, the highway was closed for hours as crews worked to clear the scene and tow the cars to various lots.

More than 70 cars, including three tractor-trailers, were involved in the Worcester crash, state police said. The scene near Exit 14 was more than 100 yards long.

About 30 people suffered minor injuries.

State police tweeted multiple pictures from the crash scene, urging people who are out driving Sunday to use caution because of the icy roads in Central Massachusetts.

Because of the massive crash and highway shutdown, state police also urged people to avoid the area and used the hashtag “#youarentgoinganywhere.”

State highway crews were out treating icy roadways with sand and salt, officials said.
