A pro-Israel organization yesterday praised the South Granville Business Improvement Association (SGBIA) for quickly replacing sidewalk flags that were vandalized.
Hundreds of sticker flags representing 80 nations were placed on Vancouver’s sidewalks ahead of the Olympics as part of a project dubbed Flagwalk.
Someone wrote “Free Palestine” on one of the Israeli flags. Another was vandalized with paint on Boxing Day, said Sharon Townsend, executive director of the SGBIA.
So far, about 25 per cent of the flags have been replaced for various reasons. Not all were vandalized.
“We are concerned about all vandalism and disrespect paid toward the nations of the world,” Townsend said. “Flagwalk is a celebration of peace and friendship.”
