VIDEO: Cranes used to relocate 500 elephants

A crane lifts an elephant so it can be transported to an African nature reserve.

Can you think of a better way to relocate a 5-ton elephant?

Conservationists are employing cranesin an effort to move 500 elephants from two wildlife parks to a reserve about 185 miles away in Malawi, according to a report from The Telegraph.

They hope the movewill keep the elephants from “coming into conflict with people,” according to the report. Their new home will provide much-neededspace and security, so the journey is well worth it.

The goal is to relocate 500 elephants to the sanctuary by the end of next year — by keeping elephant families together and moving them as a group, the animals are more likely to thrive, The Telegraph reported.

Before the elephants can be moved, however, they need to besedated, checked by vets and fitted with tracking collars.
