Based on the number of bars in our great city, it seems there are many who are happy Prohibition was overturned. The booze ban was officially scrapped 80 years ago today, and to celebrate that (and the holiday season) the Village Voice is throwing a big ol’ party.
“We plan to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Prohibition’s end by hosting an array of distilleries that have opened throughout New York City and beyond since then and saluting how far we’ve come with a drink,” says Christina Pettit of the Village Voice. Their Holiday Spirits unlimited tasting event will feature 31 spirits. The party rolls into town Dec. 5, and most of the featured distilleries — like Brooklyn Gin — are New Yorkers.
To complement the Prohibition theme, The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn will set the tone with 1920s/1930s live jazz and swing. If you are more into the 21st century, DJ Tim Martell will spin recent hits, and there will be a photobooth.
And you can’t do all that drinking on an empty stomach: Hors d’oeuvres will circle the venue.
