Volcano grounds flights to, from Europe

Several Air Canada flights to the London Heathrow airport have been cancelled to and from the Calgary International Airport due to the spread of volcanic ash across northern Europe.

Officials confirmed at least four flights were cancelled as of Thursday and the Air Canada website is posting travel advisories for a number of airports in Europe as a result of the Iceland volcano.

“Air Canada is closely monitoring the situation and is doing everything possible to accommodate affected customers,” said?Air Canada CEO Duncan Dee.

“It may take several days after the re-opening of the affected European airports before customers will be able to resume travel.”

Calgarian Kenneth Fisher said his mother had been stranded in London by the ash cloud.

“They just said the ash is too bad, they can’t fly. I am not sure when she will be home,” he said.

Some flights are expected to resume early today.
